City at a glance

As the capital of North Sumatra, Medan has a very strategic position. There are consulates of foreign countries and it is the primary centre of activities of northern Sumatra. The Medan City currently functions as:

  1. The centre of the Government of the region, both the government of the North Sumatra province, and the Medan City, as delegation's location of residence and consulate of the associates countries, as well as the location of various delegation of the Company, Business and Finance in North Sumatra.
  2. The Centre of the social-economy service for North Sumatran society like: Hospital, University , TVRI station, RRI station, etc. , including various facilities that were developed by Private corporation, especially trade centers.
  3. The centre of growth of economics, trade, finance, and services for both regionally and internationally.
  4. The main gate of regional , International and Tourism for the Western Indonesia region.


There are many older buildings in Medan that still retain their Dutch architecture. These include the old City Hall, the central Post Office, the Water Tower, which is Medan City's icon, and Titi Gantung - a bridge over the railway.

There are several historic places such as Maimun Palace (Istana Maimun), where the Sultan of Deli still lives, and the Great Mosque (Masjid Raya) of Medan built in 1906.

Medan Unique

  1. The Third Biggest City, Medan is the third biggest city in Indonesia after Jakarta and Surabaya.
  2. New Metropolitan City, Medan received Adipura Award for Metropolitan City Category from Indonesia President, Megawati Soekarnoputri on June 7, 2004.
  3. Medan Trishaw (Beca Medan) has two kinds of trishaw, machine and without machine.
  4. Billboard City, Medan side road is fully decorated with lot of billboard from different size.
  5. Parijs Van Sumatera, City of Medan especially Kesawan square has called as parijs Van Sumatera from European.

The Medan City had an area of 26.510 hectare (265,10 Km2) or 3,6% of the entire North Sumatran territory. Therefore, compared with the other city/regency, the Medan City had the area of the territory that relatively small, but with a relatively high number of populations.

Geographically the Medan city was located to south 3° 30 minutes – 3° 43 minutes latitudes and east 98° 35 minutes - 98° 44 minutes longitudes. Thus the topography of the Medan city lean to the north with the altitude of 2,5 - 37,5 meters on sea level

Demographic Info on Medan

Based on the demographic data in 2006, the population of the Medan City at this time is estimates to reach 2,036,185 lives. That number of population is recognizes as the permanent resident, whereas the temporary resident is estimates reached more than 566.661 lives, which was the commuter's population. Therefore the Medan City was one of the cities with a high number of population, thus it has a differentiation on market.


Viewed from the age structure of the population, the Medan City was populated approximately 1.377.751 lives in productive age, (15-59 years). Thus, the Medan City relatively has enough labor available, which could work in various companies from various fields, whether in the services, the trade, or the manufacture industry.
